When musicians discuss their songwriting, they usually try to explain their creative process. But singer-songwriter Jess Wright digs deeper, choosing to express how she engages with music itself, because that sensory relationship fuels her very existence. 

“It’s literally in the air,” she says. “It hangs on the notes birds sing, on the cadence of people's voices, or the bark of a dog.” Wright hears the world as a symphony — and she loves every riotously cacophonous, sweetly harmonious note.

Born and raised on a beautiful island off the coast of Maine, Jess grew up with a strong connection to music sprouting from mix CDs, car karaoke with her family, and school choirs. At 18, she moved to Nashville to pursue a degree in Mathematics at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. There, she took a songwriting class — and got hooked.

“Nashville allowed me to explore and expand my understanding of music and what it means to share it with people,” Wright says. After graduation, she moved to San Diego, where she began sharing her songs with audiences, refining them until she was ready to record Blue Rock Sessions, her debut EP.

Accompanied only by her guitar, she sings with the confidence of a far more seasoned veteran.  Honed with the help of producer Billy Crockett, her songs on Blue Rock Sessions carry an energy that gives them momentum. Wright’s musical introduction fits solidly on the folk side of Americana, with hints of country, rock and jazz influences.

Jess writes from her experience, imagination, and keen observations of life, capturing a uniquely warm and determinedly hopeful perspective that shines through her music and lyrics.

Jess has returned to Nashville, growing and developing in her career and artistry as a songwriter and performer. You can find her in writer’s rounds and co-writing sessions across town, or touring locally. With traveling, love, loss, and family at the forefront of her world, Jess’s music is as rich and uplifting as ever.
